La dinamica è materna, del tipo: “prendi quel pezzo di carta che prima o poi ti servirà“. Steven, da cocco di mamma qual era, non se lo fece dire due volte. La Stretford Technical School fece il resto, consegnando al futuro Moz un bel Certificato Generale di Educazione in Letteratura Inglese. Poi arrivò il lavoro. Prima impiegato, poi commesso in un negozio di dischi, infine cantante degli Smiths. Il resto lo sappiamo.
Ed è appunto dopo una carriera sfavillante, fatta di dischi clamorosi e camicie variopinte, che forse quel pezzo di carta tornerà a fare misteriosamente la sua comparsa fra le sinapsi del nostro. Sebbene non stia cercando nuovamente lavoro come commesso, Steven Patrick Morrissey ha comunque preso una decisione: quella di esordire come scrittore.
Ormai ci siamo, ed il suo romanzo d’esordio, che s’intitolerà “List of the Lost“, esordirà Giovedi 24 Settembre in Inghilterra, Irlanda, Australia, India, Nuova Zelanda e Sud Africa. Edito da Penguin Books, la stesura dell’opera ha portato via circa due anni all’artista Inglese.
La storia, ambientata nel 1970, ruota attorno ad un team podistico – staffetta – che accidentalmente uccide un povero miscredente. Il tale, che in seguito si rivelerà essere un demone incorporeo, maledirà ciascuno dei quattro personaggi principali.
Moz lo descrive così:
“The theme is demonology … the left-handed path of black magic. It is about a sports relay team in 1970s America who accidentally kill a wretch who, in esoteric language, might be known as a Fetch … a discarnate entity in physical form. He appears, though, as an omen of the immediate deaths of each member of the relay team. He is a life force of a devil incarnate, yet in his astral shell he is one phase removed from life. The wretch begins a banishing ritual of the four main characters, and therefore his own death at the beginning of the book is illusory.”
Niente fa presagire un’uscita dell’opera negli States, anche se diventerebbe quantomeno curioso il suo riadattamento cinematografico.
